Canada Weighs Troop Deployment to Greenland for NATO Exercises

Canada is considering deploying a small military contingent to Greenland as part of upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organization exercises, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

The source said senior military officials have presented operational plans to the government and are awaiting a decision from Prime Minister Mark Carney. His office declined to comment on the matter.

Several European allies have already confirmed their participation. Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Netherlands said they will send troops to Greenland to begin preparations for larger NATO drills scheduled for later this year.

The move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions surrounding the Arctic island. US President Donald Trump last Saturday threatened to impose a new wave of tariffs on countries that oppose his proposal for the United States to acquire Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark and a member of NATO.

In response, eight European countries issued a joint statement expressing solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland, warning that the use of tariff threats undermines transatlantic relations and risks a serious deterioration in ties.

Greenland’s growing strategic importance in the Arctic, combined with rising great-power competition, has placed the territory at the center of diplomatic and military calculations among NATO members, including Canada.
