A Canadian company is building the world's largest nuclear power plant, amid growing demand for clean energy that is spurring interest in nuclear power.

The Ontario government said Bruce Power will conduct an environmental assessment to add up to 4.8 gigawatts of capacity to its plant in Canada's most populous province.

The plant's eight reactors currently have a capacity of about 6.2 GW and provide 30% of the province's capacity.

The expansion would make the site larger than Japan's Kashiwazki-Kariwa plant, the largest in the world, with seven reactors and a capacity of more than 8 GW.

The move comes amid growing recognition that carbon-neutral nuclear power could play an important role in the global fight against climate change.

Canada is developing plans to meet its climate goals, targeting a 42% reduction in emissions from the oil and gas sector, and the Bruce project will be the province's first conventional nuclear plant in three decades.

It is noteworthy that Canada ranks sixth in the list of countries that produce the most nuclear energy, with a production capacity of 86.78 TWh; nuclear energy contributed to the production of 15% of the country's electricity.

Canada is one of the leading countries in nuclear energy technologies and uranium exports. The country has the third-largest reserves of the mineral in the world, and the second-largest exporter.
