Canada has been selected as the headquarters for a new financial institution backed by NATO, aimed at lowering borrowing costs for member states and strengthening defense financing.

The proposed institution, known as the Defense, Security and Resilience Bank, is designed to support NATO members and partner countries in meeting rising defense spending commitments. By pooling the credit strength of participating nations, the bank is expected to reduce the cost of financing military and security investments.

The decision followed negotiations hosted by Canada involving around 20 founding members, according to a senior government official who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement. The specific Canadian city that will host the institution has not yet been confirmed.

Doug Ford, premier of Ontario, welcomed the development and called for the bank to be based in Toronto, citing the city’s position as Canada’s financial hub and its strong global connectivity.

Prime Minister Mark Carney reaffirmed his government’s commitment to NATO defense spending targets. Member states, including Canada, have pledged to increase defense expenditure to 5 percent of GDP over the coming years, reflecting heightened global security pressures.
