Paul Biya, the 92-year-old President of Cameroon and the world’s longest-serving head of state, has officially announced his candidacy for an eighth term in office. The presidential election is scheduled to take place on 12 October 2025.

The announcement was made through his official account on platform X (formerly Twitter), where his office confirmed his intention to remain in power amid growing national and international scrutiny.

Biya has held office since 1982, following the resignation of his predecessor, Ahmadou Ahidjo, and has maintained a firm hold on leadership for over four decades.

His decision to run again comes despite ongoing concerns surrounding his health. In 2024, Biya’s prolonged 42-day absence from the public eye prompted widespread speculation. Nevertheless, his re-entry into the political spotlight signals his commitment to continue leading the Central African nation through ongoing political and economic challenges.

A combination of stability and controversy has marked Biya’s extended presidency. While his supporters credit him with maintaining national unity, critics have raised concerns about democratic backsliding and a lack of political renewal in Cameroon.
