At least 10 people were killed and 10 others wounded in a mass shooting in a largely Asian city in southern California following a Lunar New Year celebration, law enforcement announced Sunday.
Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department indicated that the wounded were taken to hospitals, adding that their conditions range from stable to critical.
He also pointed out that the 10 victims died at the scene in the city of Monterey Park.
Meyer did not provide any description of the male suspect or the weapon he used. He affirmed that police were investigating another incident in the nearby city of Alhambra to see whether it was connected.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the situation by the Homeland security advisor, according to the White House press secretary.
On her part, Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Biden had ordered the FBI to provide full support to local authorities and update him regularly.
Tens of thousands of people are said to have joined the first day of celebrations of the Chinese New Year, which finished about an hour before the shooting.
"Even though the incident did not occur at the 2023 Lunar New Year Festival, an active investigation is currently underway and the area near and around the festival is affected," officials said in a statement.
"As a precaution and for the safety of everyone, the City regrets to announce the cancellation of the second day of the festival, which was scheduled for today, Sunday, January 22."
