California lawmakers have introduced a bill to ban the sale of disposable e-cigarettes by January 2026, in an effort to reduce plastic pollution and regulate the vaping industry.

The state has previously passed environmental laws targeting single-use plastic bottles in hotels, polystyrene food containers, and plastic grocery bags.

Now, the focus is shifting to disposable e-cigarettes, also known as vapes, which have become a major source of plastic and battery waste.

E-cigarettes are battery-powered devices that deliver nicotine or cannabis aerosols, often infused with flavors and other chemicals.

While refillable and reusable options exist, the California proposal specifically targets single-use disposable models, which have surged in popularity.

Several countries have already taken steps to ban disposable vapes. Belgium implemented a ban in January, while the UK is set to follow in June.

If passed, California would become the first US state to enact such a law, following previous unsuccessful attempts in New York and California itself.

Under the proposed law, the sale or distribution of new or refurbished disposable e-cigarettes would be prohibited starting January 1, 2026.

Retailers violating the ban could face a $500 fine for the first offense, $1,000 for the second, and $2,000 for subsequent violations. The law would empower local and state authorities to enforce penalties and ensure compliance.

With growing concerns over environmental impact and youth vaping, California’s proposed ban signals a major shift in U.S. vaping regulations, potentially influencing other states to follow suit.
