The California State Legislature has passed a bill aimed at regulating powerful generative AI models, despite concerns from some companies and officials that such regulations might stifle emerging technology.

The legislation, known as the "Safe Innovation in AI Act," targets large AI models, requiring developers to test their systems and simulate cybersecurity attacks to prevent potential disasters.

The bill has sparked a debate among businesses, researchers, and even Democratic officials, with some fearing that the new rules could push innovators out of California and its renowned Silicon Valley.

However, the legislation has been softened from its original version, granting California authorities less power to hold developers accountable than initially proposed.

Governor Gavin Newsom now faces a deadline of September 30 to either sign the bill into law or veto it, a decision that is likely to divide opinions across the tech industry and political landscape.

The outcome will determine how California, a leader in technology and innovation, navigates the challenges posed by AI while trying to protect consumers and maintain its position at the forefront of technological development.
