California Governor Accuses Trump of Political Targeting

California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused President Donald Trump of using federal investigations for political purposes, claiming he is being targeted because he is considering a presidential run in 2028.

Newsom said the Trump administration is investigating him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, describing the probe as part of a broader effort to pursue political opponents.

According to the governor's office, federal investigators have contacted individuals linked to Newsom and issued subpoenas for documents related to events spanning several years.

The allegations come after federal authorities investigated members of Newsom's inner circle in a corruption case that resulted in a former chief of staff pleading guilty to campaign finance violations. Newsom himself has not been accused of wrongdoing.

The dispute marks the latest escalation in tensions between Newsom and Trump, who have repeatedly clashed over immigration, governance, and national politics.

Newsom remains one of the Democratic Party's most prominent figures and is widely viewed as a potential contender in the 2028 US presidential election.
