California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles following massive wildfires that have ravaged over 2,900 hectares of land and forced tens of thousands to evacuate.
The declaration, announced on Wednesday, allows local agencies and firefighting teams to request federal assistance, covering up to 75% of the costs for combating the blazes.
Governor Newsom commended the tireless efforts of firefighters while urging residents to stay updated on weather developments and adhere to emergency directives.
The Pacific Palisades wildfire, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, has rapidly spread, endangering homes and infrastructure. In response, evacuation orders have been issued to protect residents from the advancing flames.
President Joe Biden has expressed his administration’s readiness to assist California, emphasizing ongoing communication with state officials. Federal support has been offered to bolster efforts in extinguishing the wildfires and mitigating their impact.
