Cairo University has ranked first in Egypt in the field of medical and health sciences in the Times Higher Education (THE) Subject Rankings 2026, according to results announced by the university’s president, Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadek.

The Times Higher Education Subject Rankings are considered among the world’s most comprehensive and rigorous global university rankings, as they assess academic and research performance by discipline rather than relying solely on overall institutional rankings. The system evaluates universities across 11 main academic areas, encompassing 148 sub-disciplines, offering a detailed picture of institutional strengths at both national and international levels.

Abdel-Sadek explained that Cairo University achieved the top national position in six out of the nine subject areas in which Egyptian universities were ranked, representing 67 percent of the listed fields. These include medical and health sciences, where Cairo University was ranked globally within the 251–300 band, as well as computer science, education studies, and life sciences, all ranked between 301–400 worldwide. The university also ranked first nationally in arts and humanities and social sciences, both placed in the 601–800 global range.

In addition, Cairo University recorded strong performances in economics and business administration, engineering, and physical sciences, securing advanced positions compared to other Egyptian institutions.

The university president emphasized that the subject-based ranking methodology reflects the true academic and research capacity of universities within specific disciplines rather than an aggregate institutional score. The evaluation is based on internationally recognized criteria, with varying weights depending on the field, including teaching quality (24–30 percent), research volume and reputation (25–30 percent), citation impact (25–30 percent), industry income (2.5–5 percent), and international outlook (7–10 percent).

Abdel-Sadek noted that Cairo University’s results in the 2026 rankings underscore its growing global competitiveness and confirm its leading position in medical education and scientific research at both the national and regional levels.
