Cairo Univ: 9 Million Pounds to Fund Research Projects

The Cairo University Council approved, in its meeting this morning, Tuesday, to finance 8 research projects to combat the emerging coronavirus, at a cost of about 5 million pounds, to conduct scientific and laboratory research.

The Council also approved 30 suggestions presented by faculty members to finance research projects at a cost of 9 million pounds, within the framework of Cairo University policy in facing the problems facing society, especially the emerging coronavirus.

Dr. Mohamed El Khosht, President of Cairo University, has announced the opening of the door for progress, for faculty members and researchers, to present joint research projects between more than one of the university’s faculties in the field of the emerging coronavirus. Funding starts from 200 thousand pounds and reaches a maximum of one million pounds for one project, according to the terms and conditions announced on the university's website.

El Khosht stressed that the university is making great efforts and seeks to find scientific solutions to societal and global problems and bridge gaps through scientific research, noting that 5 research teams have been formed from the Faculties of Science, Medicine and Pharmacy and the National Cancer Institute to conduct scientific and laboratory research of the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19).

These teams include more than 25 scientists and researchers from Cairo University professors in various disciplines to discover a treatment for the emerging coronavirus, and it was initially funded with 10 million pounds.

El Khosht said that one of the goals of the university's executive plan during 2020 is to invest scientific research in meeting the different needs of the state. As well as motivating faculty members to participate in national and international research projects, and linking international scientific publishing to the service of the health, industry and agricultural sectors.

He added that the university’s 2020 executive plan includes the establishment of a research laboratories complex with international standards and an integrated training and research environment.
