The Embassy of Nepal in Cairo organised a special tea promotion event titled “Flavours of the Himalayas on the Banks of the Nile” at the conference hall of the Misr Public Library in Cairo, bringing together diplomats, business figures, tea traders, cultural representatives and media professionals.

In his welcoming remarks, Nepal’s Ambassador to Egypt, Sushil Kumar Lamsal, spoke about the historical, cultural and economic importance of tea in Nepal. He said Nepal is gaining wider recognition as a producer of high-quality orthodox tea and premium varieties grown in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The ambassador also pointed to the potential for expanding cooperation between Nepal and Egypt in tea trade and related sectors, saying the event formed part of the embassy’s efforts to introduce Nepalese tea to the Egyptian market and create closer links between businesses in both countries.

Reza Al-Taifi, Director of the Misr Public Libraries Fund, welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to introduce Egypt’s public audience to Nepal’s distinctive tea culture.

Ramkaji Khadka, Head of the Central Asia, West Asia and Africa Division at Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Nepal’s tea industry plays an important role in supporting rural livelihoods and contributing to economic development.

The event included a presentation by Ritesh Shah, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Nepal, who gave an overview of Nepal’s tea industry, its history, production regions, varieties and export potential. Participants also watched a video showing Nepal’s tea plantations, production process and the qualities that have helped Nepalese tea gain growing recognition in international markets.

Stephen Priest, Director of Repton International School, also shared remarks on the cultural and social importance of tea and its role in connecting communities across different countries.

During an interactive session, several guests and representatives of tea companies expressed positive views about the programme and praised the embassy’s efforts to connect Nepalese and Egyptian businesses.

The official programme was followed by a tea-tasting and networking session, where participants sampled several varieties of Nepalese tea, including masala CTC chai, orthodox black tea, white tea, green tea and herbal tea.

The event attracted more than 150 participants, including ambassadors, diplomats, tea entrepreneurs, importers, exporters, representatives of chambers of commerce, hotel managers, artists and media representatives.

The Nepalese Embassy has been actively promoting Nepalese tea and coffee in Egypt through a series of initiatives. These include the “Tea and Caricature” programme held last May in cooperation with the Misr Public Library and renowned caricature artist Fawzy Morsi, Nepal’s participation in Africa Food Expo 2025 in December, and the Nepal-Egypt Tea and Coffee Business Forum, which was held virtually on 19 May 2026 in cooperation with Nepal’s National Tea and Coffee Development Board and the Cairo Chamber of Commerce.

The embassy said the Cairo tea promotion event adds to its continuing efforts to expand the presence of Nepalese tea in the Egyptian market and strengthen trade and cultural cooperation between Nepal and Egypt.
