The Korean Cultural Center in Egypt, in cooperation with the Jeonbuk Culture and Tourism Foundation and Jeonju University, hosted this morning the 2026 K-Food Academy in Cairo from May 17 to 21 as part of efforts to strengthen cultural exchange between South Korea and Egypt through culinary arts.
The five-day academy aims to introduce Egyptian audiences and culinary professionals to the traditions, philosophy, and ingredients of Korea’s Jeonbuk region, widely known for its rich food heritage and fermentation culture.
Unlike large-scale public demonstrations, the academy will operate as an exclusive masterclass program with only eight participants per session, allowing for intensive one-on-one mentorship and personalized culinary training from Korean experts.
The academy will be led by Professor Su-in Kim, who has nearly two decades of experience in culinary education and research. She will be joined by Research Professor Ji-in Park and six specialized researchers as part of an eight-member Korean delegation.
The program will feature practical and theoretical sessions exploring Korean street food, plant-based cuisine, royal court dishes, medifood concepts, and contemporary cooking influenced by the global Hallyu wave.
Participants will also attend lectures focused on the philosophy and aesthetics of Korean cuisine, including traditions of fermentation, food preservation, and healthy eating practices deeply rooted in Korean cultural heritage.
Oh Sungho, director of the Korean Cultural Center in Egypt, said Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province is widely regarded as the “home of flavor” in Korea due to its fertile agricultural lands, natural environment, and long culinary traditions passed down across generations.
He added that Jeonju, the capital of Jeonbuk, has been designated by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy for preserving authentic Korean culinary traditions while adapting them to modern tastes.
On the sidelines of the academy, the Jeonbuk Culture and Tourism Foundation and the Korean Cultural Center in Egypt signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding cooperation in promoting Korean culinary heritage and tourism content in Egypt.
