Authorities reported at least 28 people died in western Nepal on Tuesday after their bus went off a mountain road and plunged hundreds of metres (yards) into a gorge.
At least 15 people were injured in the accident in the remote and rocky Mugu area, according to local administrator Rom Bahadur Mahat.
"We are still busy searching for bodies around the area where the bus fell," he said. The injured were rushed to a hospital.
The bus, which had started from Nepalgunj, had swerved off the road just a few kilometres (miles) from its destination, Gamgadhi town in Mugu district.
The cause of the disaster is unknown, as is the number of persons on board. Officials were concerned that the death toll could grow as rescue efforts continued.
Poorly maintained automobiles and roadways, as well as narrow roads with abrupt bends, are frequently cited for traffic accidents in Nepal's hilly terrain.
