The military forces of Burkina Faso successfully repelled an armed assault on the northern city of Kourbéli, according to local media reports.

The incident, covered by Russia Today's website, occurred in the Kongoassi area of Bam Province. The AIB news agency reported that the attackers attempted to storm the city but were forced to retreat into the forest after their assault was thwarted.

Further reports indicate that the army was able to locate the militants' hideout using drones, subsequently delivering a missile strike against them. Security sources informed the agency that Burkina Faso's security forces are determined to pursue the militants until they are completely neutralized.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been witnessing an escalation in activities by armed groups, including the local branch of ISIS and the extremist group Ansarul Islam.

According to data from non-governmental organizations, the conflict has resulted in the death of at least 10,000 people, both civilians and military personnel, and the displacement of nearly two million individuals due to the militants' attacks since 2015.
