The Burger King chain in China issued a public apology and promised to cooperate with a government investigation after a report was issued that the US fast-food giant served expired ingredients in meals.

In Nanchang, Burger King was criticized on Thursday on an annual consumer protection program that had highlighted in recent years complaints about foreign brands.

"The Nanchang outlet is run by a franchisee, yet, we apologize for the management error, Burger King said in a statement on its social media account, adding that the restaurant was shutdown due to investigation.

Burger King is an American multinational chain, founded in 1953

"We have disappointed consumer confidence in our chain. We deeply apologize for that., and we will fully cooperate with government departments in the investigation," the company pointed out.

Food safety is particularly sensitive in China after a series of scandals over tainted, expired milk, medicine and other products that resulted in the death of consumers.
