Bulgaria’s left-leaning president, Rumen Radev, announced on Monday that he will step down from office, marking a major political development in the country.
In a televised address, Radev said he will formally submit his resignation to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Under Bulgaria’s constitution, Vice President Iliana Yotova is expected to be sworn in before parliament to assume the presidency until the end of the current governmental term.
Radev’s decision comes amid growing public speculation that he may be preparing to launch a new political party, a move that could reshape Bulgaria’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
The resignation follows a period of political tension and uncertainty, as Bulgaria continues to grapple with institutional challenges and shifting alliances within its domestic political scene.
