Nikolay Denkov, the Prime Minister of Bulgaria, has resigned as planned after nine months at the helm of a pro-Western government, paving the way for his coalition partner to take the country's leadership.
The government in Sofia announced that Denkov's resignation letter was submitted to the Parliament on Tuesday.
It remains unclear when the Parliament will vote on Denkov's resignation and the government he leads.
In a speech on Tuesday evening, Denkov stated, "The government will continue its work until a new government is elected."
This move sets the stage for Maria Gabriel, a former European Commissioner and Deputy Prime Minister from the center-right GERB party, to succeed Denkov.
Denkov, from the centrist "We Continue the Change" party, is now set to become Gabriel's deputy.
Following last year's parliamentary elections, the two leading political factions reached a power-sharing agreement that includes a rotation of the Prime Minister's position.
