A British F-35 stealth fighter jet executed an emergency landing on Sunday at Kagoshima Airport in southwestern Japan following a reported technical malfunction, according to airport authorities.
The incident occurred at nearly 11:30 a.m., prompting a temporary runway closure of around 20 minutes, which disrupted several commercial flight departures and arrivals. No injuries were recorded.
The British aircraft is part of a joint military exercise with Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force and United States forces, running from 4 August until the coming Tuesday.
The United Kingdom has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group to the western Pacific as part of the drill.
