The British House of Commons, the lower chamber of Parliament, has passed the government's illegal immigration bill aimed at barring entry to asylum seekers arriving in small boats across the English Channel.
However, the law will now go to the House of Lords despite criticism from several prominent Conservatives, including Theresa May.
The Illegal Immigration Bill, which is supposed to allow people arriving in the UK by irregular means to be taken to a third country, passed by 289 votes to 230.
The bill is expected to face greater opposition in the House of Lords, where it could be amended or delayed.
But former Prime Minister Theresa May has warned that more people will leave the UK because of government reforms aimed at deterring migrants from crossing the Channel to the United Kingdom (UK).
