On Saturday, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, and her husband, Prince Philip have been injected with a COVID-19 vaccine, according to sources inside Buckingham Palace.

The sources added that the Queen and the Duke received their vaccinations at Windsor Castle where they have been isolating since the start of the pandemic.

The royal couple fall in the high-risk age group being prioritized for vaccination by the UK government.

The Queen "decided that she would let it be known she has had the vaccination," the palace statement said.

Royal officials said they took the rare step of commenting on the monarch's health in order to prevent inaccuracies and further speculation.

The vaccines were administered by a doctor from the Royal Household. It is not known what vaccine the couple was given.

Last month, the Queen appeared alongside several other senior members of the royal family for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began.

In 2020 she went seven months - between March and October - without carrying out public engagements outside of a royal residence.

During that time, her eldest child, Prince Charles, 72, contracted coronavirus and displayed mild symptoms.

Palace sources also told the BBC that her grandson Prince William tested positive in April - although Kensington Palace refused to comment officially.
