At least twenty people were killed and 15 others were injured, including students and professors during a gunfire that erupted at Kabul University in the Afghan capital on Monday, according to Sputnik news agency.
In press statements, Interior ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said, "The enemies of Afghanistan, the enemies of education... have entered Kabul University."
"The security forces are in the area trying to control the situation. They are advancing carefully to prevent any harm to the students."
On his part, Hamid Obaidi, a spokesman for the ministry of higher education, told AFP that the gunfire erupted when government officials were expected to arrive for the opening of a book event.
Arian added that several people had been rescued from the university campus.
It is worth mentioning that, last week at least 24 people, mostly students, were killed in a suicide attack on an educational center in western Kabul that was claimed by IS.
