Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Thursday that the government would respond in kind if U.S. President Donald Trump decided to impose tariffs on Latin America's largest economy.
"It's very simple, if he imposes taxes on Brazilian products, there will be reciprocity," Lula told a news conference in Brasilia.
He said he wanted to have mutual respect between himself and Trump, as both democratically elected leaders, according to Reuters.
"The United States runs a trade surplus with Brazil, which according to Brazil's government hit $253 million last year."
