Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered the indefinite preventive detention of 354 of the 1,459 followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro detained for the January 8 coup, who has already held a hearing, Spanish newspaper El Debate reported.

Judge Alexandre de Morais decided that 354 of those arrested in flagrante delicto would go to preventive detention, a precautionary measure that does not stipulate the length of the sentence, with the aim of "ensuring public order".

Those involved go into preventive detention for participating in "acts of terrorism" and "destruction of public property" and will be tried in prison for the crimes of "criminal association, violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, and coup d'état".

They were also charged with "threats, persecution, and incitement to crime," according to a statement issued by the Federal Supreme Court.

Another 220 people have been granted temporary release, but they must comply with precautionary measures such as surrendering their passports, appearing weekly before the authorities, wearing electronic monitoring anklets, and will not be able to leave their cities of residence, among other measures.
