Brazil Investigates Cyberattack After False Alerts Sent to Mobile Phones

Brazilian civil defense authorities have suspended the country's mobile emergency alert system following what officials believe may have been a cyberattack that triggered the distribution of false emergency warnings to millions of mobile phone users overnight.

In a statement released on Saturday, Brazil's Civil Defense agency said it had temporarily disabled the alert platform while investigators assess the source of the unauthorized messages and determine whether the system's security had been compromised.

The agency said the alert was issued under the classification of a “severe emergency warning” and contained the term “misanthropy,” a reference to hatred of humanity, raising immediate concerns that the message did not originate from authorized government channels.

“The message was transmitted under the category of a severe-risk alert and included content unrelated to any official emergency communication,” the agency said. “The most likely explanation is that the system was targeted by cybercriminals.”

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the false notifications were generated and whether external actors gained access to the emergency communications infrastructure.

Officials have not yet disclosed how many devices received the alert or whether any vulnerabilities have been identified within the system. The contents of the message and the circumstances surrounding its transmission are being examined by cybersecurity specialists.

The incident highlights growing concerns over the security of public warning systems, which play a critical role in communicating information during natural disasters, public safety emergencies, and other high-risk situations.
