British energy giant BP is poised to begin drilling its first gas well in the Mediterranean within days, marking the start of its 2026 exploration program in Egypt, company officials said Wednesday.
Speaking at an event organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cairo, Wael Shaheen, BP’s regional vice president for Egypt said the company is accelerating its activities in both the Mediterranean and Red Sea regions. “Timely payment of dues and investment incentives have helped speed up our projects,” Shaheen noted.
The new well follows a recent discovery jointly announced by BP and Eni, which the companies are preparing to bring into production as soon as possible.
Shaheen emphasized that BP remains committed to expanding its exploration footprint in Egypt, highlighting ongoing investments in offshore and onshore petroleum projects.
The initiative aligns with Egypt’s broader strategy to attract foreign investment in energy and accelerate domestic gas production, as demand continues to rise in the region.
