British former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two people, Nigerian authorities and his promoter have confirmed.

The 36-year-old boxer sustained minor injuries in the accident, which is under investigation by local police. Officials said Joshua was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.

Joshua’s promoter told the Daily Mail that efforts were under way to contact the boxer directly, adding that he appeared to be unharmed based on images circulating online and cautioning against speculation about his condition.

Lanre Ogunlowo, the police commissioner for Ogun State, confirmed to the Associated Press that Joshua had been admitted for medical care following the crash. Authorities said two foreign nationals died at the scene.

Gbenga Omotoso, information commissioner for Lagos State, expressed condolences to the families of the victims, describing the incident as a tragic loss.

A spokesperson for Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was travelling above the speed limit before losing control while attempting to overtake another car. The vehicle reportedly collided with a truck parked by the roadside.

The crash occurred on a major highway in Ogun State linking the region to Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub. The location is roughly 80 kilometres from a boarding school Joshua attended as a child before moving to the UK at the age of 12.

Local media, including Punch newspaper, reported that the car Joshua was travelling in struck a truck while en route from Lagos to Sagamu. Police said Joshua was accompanied by three other individuals at the time of the accident.

The incident comes just one week after Joshua defeated social media personality Jake Paul in a high-profile bout in Miami, marking his return to the ring after a 15-month absence.

The former Olympic champion is widely expected to face long-time rival Tyson Fury next year, a potential blockbuster fight that would be one of the biggest events in modern boxing.
