European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for an investigation into the Israeli strike on an UNRWA school in Gaza, which killed dozens of civilians.

Borrell said Thursday through his account on the “X” platform: “Reports from Gaza once again show that violence and suffering are still the only reality for hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians... This horrific news must be independently investigated.”

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) confirmed that Israel bombed a school affiliated with it in the Gaza Strip on Thursday “without warning” after thousands of displaced Palestinians took refuge there.

A hospital in the Gaza Strip announced that the death toll from the Israeli air strike on the UNRWA school in central Gaza had risen to 37 (which later rose to 40 according to the government media office in the Gaza Strip).

The Israeli army claimed responsibility for the strike, saying it targeted a “Hamas compound.”
