British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's wife, Carrie, gave birth to a healthy baby girl at a London hospital on Thursday morning.

“Both mother and daughter are doing very well. The couple would like to thank the brilliant NHS maternity team for all their care and support,” a spokeswoman for the couple said in a statement.

They were photographed walking into the hospital, reportedly at 7.40 am.

The baby marks the couple’s second child together, after their son Wilfred was born in April 2020, and Johnson's seventh child.

He had four children with his second wife, Marina Wheeler, a lawyer, in addition to at least one other child from an extramarital relationship.

In addition, Johnson has repeatedly refused to say precisely how many children he has fathered, although in an interview with NBC in September he affirmed he had six.

The Labor leader, Sir Keir Starmer, sent his congratulations to the couple on the arrival of their baby girl, adding: "Wishing your family health and happiness."

This happy news followed a dramatic day for Johnson on Wednesday as the Prime Minister came under increasing pressure to explain reports that his staff last year held a Christmas party that breached the country's coronavirus rules.

At that time, Coronavirus cases were rising, and people across the country were banned from holding most types of gatherings. The Prime Minister ordered an inquiry and said he was "furious" about the situation.
