Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has declared a national state of emergency after nearly 50 days of road blockades that have disrupted transport, trade, and essential supplies across the country.

The move comes amid growing economic pressure, with business groups estimating losses of around $3 billion due to the protests and transport disruptions.

In a statement, Paz said the emergency measures are aimed at reopening roads and restoring access to work, education, healthcare, and basic goods, stressing that Bolivians should not be "held hostage" by blockades.

The declaration follows a government agreement with the country's main labor federation to help end the protests, which have contributed to shortages of food and medicine in several regions.

Despite the emergency order, the government said it remains open to dialogue while seeking to restore normal economic activity and public services throughout Bolivia.
