Sri Lankan Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi announced in her speech to the parliament on Wednesday that six cases of rare blood clots of the AstraZeneca vaccine were detected, 3 of them died later.
However, the state did not suspend the vaccination rollout that succeeded in vaccinating a million persons.
After reporting dozens of rare blood clots in several countries including the European bloc, the World Health Organization re-examined the vaccine and evaluated its side effects. It managed in identifying a possible link between the vaccine and the blood clotting cases.
The same evaluation was backed by the European Medicines Agency indicated the rare possibility of blood clotting, however, the vaccine is effective.
The use of AstraZeneca was suspended in several European states, while other countries decided to restrict the use of the vaccine for only those aged more than 55.
