The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings for New York City and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut, as a powerful winter storm is forecast to impact a broad stretch of the US East Coast.
Meteorologists warned that heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected to develop from Sunday into Monday, affecting regions from the Mid-Atlantic to the Northeast. The storm system could bring significant disruptions to travel, infrastructure and coastal communities.
Forecasters predict snowfall totals of up to 46 centimeters in New York City and surrounding areas, including Long Island. New Jersey and southeastern New England are also expected to experience intense snowfall combined with powerful wind gusts.
Sustained winds are forecast to range between 40 and 56 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 72 to 88 kilometers per hour Sunday night. The strongest impacts are anticipated along coastal areas, where minor to potentially widespread coastal flooding could occur.
The National Weather Service cautioned that strong winds may lead to power outages, particularly in exposed coastal regions.
The approaching blizzard underscores the threat of severe winter weather along the eastern seaboard, as authorities urge residents to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and possible utility disruptions.
