In a phone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Aty, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, he has discussed the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, focusing on Gaza, Lebanon, and Sudan.
Blinken emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and an increase in humanitarian aid deliveries. He expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s continuous efforts to facilitate the release of hostages and underscored the importance of Egypt’s contributions to easing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Blinken also acknowledged Egypt’s pivotal role in regional stability, thanking Abdel-Aty for the significant efforts Egypt has undertaken to promote peace and protect civilians in Sudan. He commended Egypt for its role in facilitating humanitarian aid to Sudanese civilians and advancing the political transition toward a civilian government, despite the complexities of the ongoing conflict.
The two diplomats also discussed Lebanon’s political impasse and the growing security challenges in the region. Blinken stressed the importance of pursuing a diplomatic solution in Lebanon to enable displaced civilians to return safely to their homes. He urged Lebanese leaders to resolve the presidential vacuum promptly to restore political stability.
Egypt has increasingly become a central player in managing multiple crises across the Middle East and North Africa. In recent months, Egypt’s diplomatic efforts have been instrumental in addressing both the Gaza conflict and the ongoing war in Sudan, solidifying its position as a critical mediator in regional affairs.
