U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that the talks in Cairo and Doha "might be the last opportunity to end the war in the Gaza Strip and secure the release of those held by Hamas."
The Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post reported on Monday that Blinken, before his meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, stated, "Washington is working to ensure that there is no regional escalation amid concerns of a potential attack by Iran on Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31."
Blinken arrived in Israel yesterday for a visit aimed at intensifying diplomatic pressure to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza next week.
A senior U.S. State Department official noted that during Blinken's tenth visit to the region since the beginning of the war on Gaza last October, he will meet today with senior Israeli leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
