Birmingham has officially appointed its first Muslim Lord Mayor, with councilor Zafar Iqbal Choudhry taking office during a ceremony that opened with verses from the Quran.
Born in Azad Kashmir in Pakistan, Choudhry moved to Birmingham in 1969 at the age of 14 and later built a successful career in manufacturing, property, and local business.
The Birmingham City Council praised his long record of public service, including work in community safety, policing oversight, and charitable initiatives.
Choudhry, who was first elected as a councilor in 2006, said his appointment was a “deep honor” and pledged to represent all residents of Birmingham.
His inauguration marks a historic moment for Britain’s second-largest city and reflects its diverse multicultural identity.
