Two White House sources revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump plans to leave Washington on the morning of the inauguration day of President-elect Joe Biden next Wednesday, instead of his original plan to leave on Tuesday.
The sources said that Trump, who said he would not attend the inauguration ceremony, was preparing to hold a farewell ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, where Air Force One is based.
It is clear that Trump does not want to leave the U.S. federal capital as a former president, so he will travel before the end of his term to his luxurious headquarters in Maralago in Palm Beach, Florida, where he intends to settle, aboard Air Force One.
Mean while, in contrary to modern military tradition in the United States, the Pentagon will not organize a farewell party for outgoing Trump while he is leaving, for he will visit the military base. It is noteworthy that the first American president to attend a farewell party presented to him by the armed forces before leaving the White House was Ronald Reagan in 1989, and then after that it has become a tradition that all previous presidents attend before leaving their office.
Trump is the first president in 150 years to boycott the inauguration of his successor.
Sources said Trump, who has become the only US president to face impeachment in Congress twice, plans to issue more pardons before his departure.
On the other hand, the halls of the White House went empty very quickly as a number of advisers in fact left the building with their documents and souvenirs. In stark contrast to Trump, who is deprived of his Twitter account and lives alone in the White House, Vice President Mike Pence every day appears to be the one taking the lead.
Pictures of Trump during his travels in the United States or around the world were removed from the walls of the famous West Wing. On the large blank walls, only a handful of paintings remain, awaiting Biden's pictures.
