The US president revealed that he had reached a compromise with his Chinese counterpart over the issue of Taiwan.

In a step intended to escalate tensions between Taiwan and Beijing, US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he and President Xi Jinping of China "will abide by the Taiwan agreement."

Biden's remarks came after several illegal military overflights by the Chinese airplanes and military jets in Taiwan's air defense area for four consecutive days, which some politicians and military experts say could be seen as a warning to Taiwan's president ahead of the island's national day.

Speaking to media at the White House, Biden said: "I've spoken with Xi about Taiwan. We agree we'll abide by the Taiwan agreement. That's where we are. And we made it clear that I don't think he should be doing anything other than abiding."

It's worth mentioning that China always views Taiwan as a breakaway province and has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve unification with the island.

On the other hand, Washington's decision to establish diplomatic ties with Beijing instead of Taiwan comes with the proviso that the future of Taiwan will be determined by peaceful means.
