President Joe Biden has stated that the United States is facing a test in preserving democracy. He made these remarks during a tribute to the late Republican Senator John McCain in Tempe, Arizona yesterday.
According to CNN, President Biden is expected to announce funding from the American Rescue Plan for the construction of a new library honoring Senator McCain in partnership with the McCain Institute and Arizona State University.
In his speech, President Biden reflected on the absence of John McCain and the courage, insight, and vision that America currently lacks. He contemplated what John fought for and what he was willing to die for. He also highlighted the need for unity among Americans.
"America is facing a test that poses the question: What will we do to preserve our democracy? Can we, as John wrote, never give up? Will we shy away from history or make history? Will we put partisanship aside and put our country first? I say we must and we will," President Biden stated.
During his remarks, the president was interrupted by climate activists who urged him to take further action on fossil fuels. President Biden promised to discuss the issue with the environmental activist at a later time.
President Biden emphasized that democracy is not easy and that it means the rule of the people. Regardless of political affiliation, it means respecting free and fair elections and accepting the outcome, whether it is victory or defeat.
He underscored the importance of rejecting and denouncing political violence, stating that such violence is unacceptable in America and should never be normalized. "To preserve democracy in the United States, we must set aside partisanship and put our country first," he said.
President Biden urged voters to participate in upcoming elections, stating that the response to the threats the nation faces lies in engagement and building alliances. He emphasized that a clear majority of Americans believe in their democracy and are ready to protect it.
As the United States grapples with challenges to democracy, President Biden's call for unity, respect for elections, rejection of violence, and active civic participation echoes his commitment to safeguarding democratic values and strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
