Biden Undergoes Surgery for Skin Cancer Removal

Former US President Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove cancerous skin cells, NBC News reported on Thursday, citing a spokesperson.

The 82-year-old is said to be recovering well following the procedure.

The operation, a common treatment for the most widespread types of skin cancer, came months after Biden revealed in May that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. His medical team described the illness as aggressive yet hormone-sensitive, meaning it could respond positively to treatment.

Biden had previously undergone the removal of a skin lesion during a routine medical examination in 2023, while still in office. That lesion was later identified as basal cell carcinoma, one of the most common forms of skin cancer.

His physical and mental health has long been the subject of scrutiny. Biden unexpectedly ended his re-election campaign in July 2024, following a disastrous debate performance against current President Donald Trump.

The event sparked widespread concern within the Democratic Party about his ability to continue in public office.

Biden was the oldest person ever elected to the US presidency when he won in 2020. However, Trump, now 79, surpassed that milestone after winning the presidency again in 2024.

Since leaving office, Biden has largely limited his public appearances. One of his most notable interventions came in a speech defending Social Security from cuts proposed by the Trump administration.
