US President Joe Biden stated on Friday that his predecessor, Donald Trump, should not have access to any intelligence briefings due to his “erratic behavior.”
Asked if Trump should get the briefings, Biden replied: “I think not.”
“Because of his erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection,” Biden clarified during an interview with CBS Evening News, referring to the 6 January storming of the US Capitol by Trump’s supporters.
Former US presidents traditionally receive some intelligence briefings even after leaving the office.
However; multiple intelligence experts and others have argued Trump poses a national security risk as a private citizen, noting that he can't be trusted to safeguard classified information.
Biden demurred when he was asked about his biggest concern would be if Trump received classified information.
“I’d rather not speculate out loud. I just think that there is no need for him to have the … intelligence briefings,” he said. “What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”
“You’ve called him an existential threat. You’ve called him dangerous. You’ve called him reckless,” CBS News' Norah O”Donnell said to the President.
"Yeah, I have. And I believe it," Biden responded.
