U.S. President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi at the White House on July 26, the White House announced on Friday.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said this visit would highlight the strategic partnership between the two countries and advance bilateral cooperation under a 2008 agreement that governed the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

In addition, Psaki outlined areas of shared interest such as energy and health, affirming that Biden looked forward to strengthening cooperation with Iraq on "security issues to include joint efforts to ensure the enduring defeat" of the (IS) militant group.

Al-Kadhimi and US envoy Brett McGurk discussed the withdrawal of troops from Iraq Thursday in Baghdad.

The meeting came a little more than a week after 14 rockets were fired at the Ain al-Assad air base, which hosts American troops in western Iraq, as well as three others that landed near the US embassy in Baghdad.

The attacks have been blamed on pro-Iranian armed groups within a state-sponsored paramilitary force.

Some 3,500 foreign troops are still on Iraqi territory, including 2,500 Americans, who have been posted to help fight the (IS) group since 2014.

In Washington, the Iraqi Prime Minister is expected to push for a concrete timetable of American troop withdrawal. The implementation of their departure could take years.
