The White House said US President Joe Biden has taken steps to address the shortage of infant formula in the country, using the Defense Production Act to help manufacturers obtain ingredients needed to increase supplies.
Biden also directed US agencies to use Defense Department commercial aircraft to bring infant formula into the United States from abroad.
US supermarket shelves have been empty of baby formula since Abbott Laboratories, one of the largest US producers, recalled products in February after complaints of a bacterial infection.
On Monday, Abbott said it had reached an agreement with the US health regulator to resume production of infant formula at its Michigan plant, a major step toward filling a nationwide shortage.
