U.S. President Joe Biden announced, Thursday, that ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi was killed during U.S. special operations in northwest Syria.

The White House released a statement from Biden, who described the raid as a "counterterrorism operation to protect the American people and our Allies, and make the world a safer place."

Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the current leader of ISIS, was "taken off the battlefield" in the operation, Biden revealed, confirming that all U.S. forces who took part had returned safely.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that 13 people were killed during an overnight raid by US special operations forces in northwestern Syria.

“13 people at least were killed, among them 4 children and 3 women, during the operation,” SOHR said, noting that the death toll could rise in the coming period as some of the wounded are in serious conditions.

“U.S. Special Operations forces under the control of U.S. Central Command conducted a counter-terrorism mission this evening in northwest Syria. The mission was successful,” Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said in a statement.

“There were no U.S. casualties. More information will be provided as it becomes available.”
