US President Joe Biden approved a major disaster declaration for Hawaii, Thursday, to set federal aid to support Hawaii's Maui after the fierce wildfires that raged the city, leaving dozens of deaths behind.
The freed Federal funds will be dedicated to helping those who were impacted by the fires like houses, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.
Biden announced that he had a phone call with Hawaii Governor Josh Green to assert his commitment to making sure that the devastated state receives “everything it needs from the federal government.”
US President said during his participation at PACT anniversary: “Anyone who’s lost a loved one, whose home has been damaged or destroyed is going to get help immediately,” adding: “We’re working as quickly as possible to fight these fires and evacuate residents and tourists. In the meantime, our prayers are with the people of Hawaii. But not just our prayers: Every asset we have will be available to them.”
Powerful wildfires raged, Tuesday, in Lahaina on Maui island. The blazes were strengthened by the winds of Hurricane Dora.
Biden responded in a statement, saying: “Jill and I send our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones in the wildfires in Maui, and our prayers are with those who have seen their homes, businesses, and communities destroyed."
He added: “We are grateful to the brave firefighters and first responders who continue to run toward danger, putting themselves in harm’s way to save lives.”
