On Sunday, US President Joe Biden approved an emergency declaration for Mississippi after a powerful storm swept through the state, killing at least 25 people there and one person in Alabama.

A White House statement said Biden ordered federal aid to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in affected areas.

Funding will be available to affected people in Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, and Sharkey counties, according to the statement.

The Mississippi tornado left a trail of damage for more than 100 miles (160 km). Television footage showed uprooted trees, torn homes, and damaged cars. Many areas were without electricity.

Terrell compared the devastation to a tornado in Joplin, Missouri that killed 161 people in 2011.

At least 24 tornado reports were issued to the National Weather Service Friday night through Saturday morning by storm chasers and observers.
