US President Joe Biden has confirmed that he intends to announce his candidacy for a second term in the presidential elections scheduled for 2024, but he will not take this step now.

In an interview with ABC News, the 80-year-old Biden, who is the oldest president in US history, said that "his intention from the beginning to run" for a second term.

Hours earlier, US First Lady Jill Biden told the Associated Press (AP) that her husband had decided on his candidacy, and all that remained was to determine when and where it would be announced.

But Biden stressed that he is in no rush to announce his candidacy. "There are a lot of other things that we need to get done in the short term before I start campaigning" for a second term, he said.

In response to a question about whether his age affected his decision to run or not, Biden replied, "No, but it is legitimate for people to raise issues related to my age, this is completely legitimate."
