US President Joe Biden described the attack on government buildings by supporters of the defeated Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, as "horrific."

This was Biden's first direct public comment on the events taking place in Brazil.

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan wrote on Twitter earlier: “The United States condemns any attempt to undermine democracy in Brazil.

For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron called for "respect for democratic institutions" in Brazil, stressing France's "steadfast support" for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, after activists supporting former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed several centers of power in the country.

"The will of the Brazilian people and democratic institutions must be respected!" Macron wrote on Twitter, adding, "President Lula can count on France's unwavering support."

The Brazilian police evacuated the headquarters of the National Congress, several hours after it was stormed by hundreds of supporters of the far-right former president, Jair Bolsonaro, according to what was reported by the French Press Agency.

Operations are still underway to evacuate troublemakers from the Supreme Court and the Planalto presidential palace.
