The best phones of 2019, the handsets that showcase the best of what a modern-day smartphone can be in terms of both hardware and software.

* Google Pixel 4

Pixel 4 (and the 6.3-inch Pixel 4 XL) has a lot to recommend it, including a 90-Hz screen, a super-speedy Face Unlock mechanism, and the usual bunch of Pixel extras – like a real-time transcription app, automatic screening for spam and robo calls, and smart display-esque mode that kicks in when the phone is charging wirelessly.

*iPhone 11

Starting at $700, the iPhone 11 is the best midtier model Apple has ever made. Its cameras get an excellent new Night Mode and an ultrawide-angle camera adds extra detail in photos. Video is fantastic, too.

*Mi Note 10

Mi Note 10 from Xiaomi packs a ton of amazing camera hardware, making it the most flexible camera phone to date. It starts with the biggest and highest-res sensor on the market, a 1/1.33" 108MP Samsung unit - that in itself is enough to have us excited, producing nice 27MP shots day and night, and having shallow depth of field for subject isolation all on its own without Portrait mode trickery.

*OnePlus 7T

OnePlus 7T is so good in so many areas that we can't stop recommending it. It's our top pick for an almost-flagship - a premium device with a lot of the makings of the high-end models, but not quite as all-out. As such it's missing few things from the 7T Pro - most notably the 3x telephoto, opting for a standard 2x instead. In any case, all three cams on the 7T are bound to leave a smile on your face.

* Samsung Galaxy S10

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus is the best phone you can get for Android right now, if you're just going by specs. Naturally, as the first flagship of 2019, its new Snapdragon 855 processor is the big standout here with even better performance than the phones that closed out 2018. Add in a few cool new (but not essential) features, Samsung's stunning-as-ever display and design as well as top specs and you have a true flagship – for a true flagship price, of course, starting at $999.
