German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed, today, his country's wishes for a fair and "peaceful" presidential election for the United States, noting that Berlin will seek a new transatlantic partnership agreement with Washington after the results are released.

Speaking to press, Maas said: "“We wish all Americans a fair, good and above all, a peaceful election day. It is a landmark vote that will also determine the direction and the role of the US in the world.”

He added that Berlin will seek a “functioning transatlantic partnership” after the vote, stressing that “we want a new deal in this partnership.”

The foreign minister's uncommon statement came as relations are strained between Germany and the United States under President Donald Trump.

Trump has always directed his anger on Germany, most notably because of its failure to adhere to the defense spending goal agreed upon within NATO and the strong German export sector.

Separately, German Deputy Chancellor Olaf Schultz expressed his hope that Americans would see "a future marked by reconciliation, not pision."
