The first heatwave of the year has hit Germany, prompting Berlin police to take the unusual step of deploying water cannons in the capital's streets, usually reserved for demonstrations and protests.

Euronews reported that the vehicles patrolled several of the city's most prominent landmarks, providing relief from the sweltering heat for both residents and tourists. Their patrols included the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, and the area surrounding the Reichstag building.

Germany has been experiencing a severe heatwave for several days, with temperatures reaching and exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. The heat is exacerbated by the continued high temperatures during the night.

Preliminary data from the German Meteorological Service indicates that last night was the warmest night in Germany since records began, amidst this exceptional heatwave.
